A Letter to You, My Daughter

The day was 19th November, the year 2002. I was drowsy. I had woken up after six hours. As I looked up, I could see tears streaming down my sister’s face. Tears of joy. For after a caesarian section operation due to fetal distress, she gave me the news. A beautiful baby girl had been born. I looked to my side and was in awe. I couldn’t believe it. There you were, right next to me. After nine months, another journey with you had begun.

It’s now been 17 years. Time has really flown by. There was a time I couldn’t imagine myself being able to handle the parental responsibilities, to be a good mother to you, a mother you could be proud of. And by God’s grace, we’ve managed to support you, support your growth, providing for your basic needs, even though not to the level that you desire at times. You have been exposed to many opportunities, for your mind to fathom all possibilities. By God’s grace, we’ve trained you in the ways of the Lord, for you to keep to them, for you to always remember, His word is a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.

I cannot be any less proud of being your mother. I actually enjoy it. I do, however, miss the earlier years when you would hang out with me everywhere I went. But I have come to accept that you are growing up.

And growing up you have. You are beautiful. You have a great mind. You know what you want in life. I may not always trust your judgment, because I am your mother. Please remember, all I have with me are the best of intentions whenever I deal with you. Have I been harsh with you? Perhaps, especially when I feel I’m not getting through to you. But I am always reminded that you have two ears, shouting won’t make you listen to me any better.

I know, in years to come, we’ll have a good laugh, especially when I think about my reactions at times. My mother reminds me of what she went through when I was a teenager. I spoke to her the other day, on how difficult I was, and we laughed about it. And I see myself in you. Mum still loved me despite treating her in a cold manner or not showing much interest in what she was doing or saying. She still did what was best for me. And I promise you, my angel, to understand you too and do what is best for you.

You are very good to your brother. Yes, you fight a lot, which surprises me considering the age difference. But he really does enjoy your company more than you can imagine. And you are a great cousin to the younger girls who are always looking up to you. Be available to them, always providing the necessary mentorship and keep lending them an ear.

I’ll get a bit jealous here. There are times I feel rejected, for you prefer being with your company, your peers. I know I’ll have to grow up into understanding your need for independence. I like some of your friends, and pray that you will make wise decisions concerning your company. And don’t be concerned about how many hits and likes you get on Instagram or any other platform. You don’t need many friends, just the good ones, for bad company corrupts good morals. You only need a few good friends who genuinely care for you.

You long to move out of home as soon as you reach 18 years. It is exciting for you, it is scary for me. May God give me the courage to let you go, so that you can discover the world for yourself. I trust that you have received wise counsel from your father, aunties, uncles, grandparents and myself. Hold on to our words. Remember that we have experience.

And may experience be kind to you. LOVE. LIVE. LAUGH. Love people. That is a command. Pursue your dreams. Do not let anything or anyone hold you back. Laughter is good medicine for your heart. So, laugh even more.

And guard your heart. Don’t be distracted by the things of this world; the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. Your heart is the

wellspring of life. And do not be consumed by drunkardness. Abstain from sexual intimacy before marriage. We have talked about this. Live an upright life, a life pleasing unto the Lord.

My child, you are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are the daughter of the King. You are royal priesthood. You deserve the best. I pray for you every day. My prayers will always be that you become the best in this world. May you be blessed in your studies (current and future), in your work, in your relationships, in your pursuits, and in all that you do.

I love you my daughter. I love you my Angel. Always and forever will.

Your Mum.

Very touching, I almost cried for real. It’s not easy to have a teenager in the house, am always second guessing my self and asking myself, ‘ did I handle that issue the best way?’ And he fights with his sister all the time despite the 11 yrs age difference but they love each other to bits. This I notice when each one is having a conversation about the other in absentia. When they play together it’s magic. Anyway, thank you for this. It has spoken to me!
